Whats in the Olympic Logos - Jayne

#1.) Rio 2016 design is the inspiration of the city's famous natural attraction "Sugarloaf Mountain created in a heart figure with green, yellow and blue. The colors of Brazil national flag and verifies Brazil's devotion to sports.

2.) the star is very USA, it is good to know that the the six rays of the star represents Hope, Harmony, Respect, Friendship, Excellence and Celebration.

3.) Madrid 2016 A hand with each finger painted differently is intended as a symbol of unity representing all the people, nationalities races and culture that co exist in Madrid.

4.) Tukyo 2016 Japanese knot known as MUSUBI five Olympic colors signify blessing during the times of the ceremony.


This things are very interesting to learn that each country has their messages to the world with by just representing their logo, but there is one thing I think is common with each country in ahich the orignal purpose of the Olympic is to promote unity and peace for the world.

This article is something about the disadvantages of hosting an Olympic Games, that came into my mind even before taking this class, I thought it is just a common sense that hosting an Olympic Games of course would require a big venue where the sports and games would take place aside from the big budget and I was right this article confirms it like what is to be expected, it is always the minorities and lowered income are usually affected. Another thing which is not very good with hosting the Olympic Games, the host city is responsible for all the costs, but not in control on the biggest revenue.

This summer course is about the Olympics of which I dont have much knowledge, as I was not following all about Olympics, it is not I that I am not interested, but it just I am too busy, and occupied with so many things. I thought it is very interesting. It is always interesting to know new things, from this term I learned some good things and bad things about the Olympics, the advantages and disadvantages, to the host countries, as well as the athletes itself, the doping and about the issues, moments and stories, especially popular athletes like Michael Phelps who is the in limelight like a popular actor in the movies, whom moves are always watch.

I think I have enjoyed the class, it was very good that I had my time to study something about the Olympics, doing research thru the computer, reading articles, commenting on some of them, and it is so good to know that each logos have their significant meaning to the countries who applied for candidancy, it is very interesting that from there, there is already a hint about the countries' culture or what is important about the country, I thought creating a logo is so brilliant. This class is also a very good practice for my writing, reading and listening that will help me in my progress.

Reflection from week 1-7 (Oksana)

This is our last day of summer class. The weather outside seems to look like whole summer is over. But this is not about summer, this is about summer class, which is always fun in BIR.
I liked this class because it was very interesting. I found out a lot about Olympics, not only good sides but also bad ones. The movies that we watched were very educational. Also the information about host cities from the book was very helpful. I found out a lot about Chicago as a host city for the Olympics 2016. It would be great to have it here.
So , I really liked summer class, information and everything I learned here. The only thing that would make it more exciting would be more fieldtrips. Oksana

The dark side of Glory

Everything about the Olympics looks so great when you don't dig deeper . In this class we learned not only good sides but also bad ones. The first movie that we watched about German athletes was very educational. It even takes people's health and life to be great in the Games. Also this articles about people being driven out of their homes because of giving the way for the Olympics. But inspite of all this bad sides I still think that Olympics have much more good sides than bad. And I still think that Chicago will be very lucky if it will get it this time. Oksana

"The dark side of glory" by Kats

I just wrote specifically about the Beijing Olympics, but here I write about some negative sides of the past Olympics. We watched a video about the East German female athletes and swimmers who took steroids unknowingly. They were so pure and even gullible as to trust their factitious doctors who were actually assigned to give the athletes steroid shots. As a poor Communist country, East Germany craved for one thing that would boost their people's pride and honor, unfortunately in a deceptive way. It is now very obvious to us that those women all looking like men were taking metabolic steroids, but back in the 1970s, the world was not yet knowledgeable enough to notice it. These women are still suffering from all kinds of side effects decades after their retirement. I also remember clearly that Ben Johnson got disqualified because of his taking steroid shots after his triumph over Carl Lewis. It is unfortunate that there are always cheaters who would do anything to win. It is like a cat and mouse chase. If they are so entirely dedicated to cheating, why don't they put the same amount of energy in winning fairly? Those medalists are supposed to be our heroes and heroines. Do heroes and heroines cheat in the movies? I know it is hard, but I expect them to have a higher standard to be a good model.

Logos(Oksana)

I have read some stories from the book about Olympic. Of course nobody wants to be driven out of their homes to give a way to the Olympics. But I think those people were taken care of and got their homes in the different location even better ones.
What about logos I think that the best one is Chicago logos, because it looks very much like Olympics I don't know why. I also liked Tokyo too. All of the information that I have read was very intersting. I did't know anything about logos and what everything means. Now I know. I think Chicago shoud be the host city for the Olympics 2016.
